Year 1/2 - Mrs Nunn
This term in Class LN we have been learning about habitats and Earth Art in connection with our ‘Save the Planet – The Ice Caps are Melting’ topic. The children have enjoyed spending time exploring the school grounds, looking for microhabitats in the wood and garden. The children have particularly enjoyed learning about cold biome of Antarctica. We conducted our own scientific experiment using ice cubes and cling film to understand the effects of global warming. Additionally, we have used maps and globes to find out where in the world habitats are located. We have liked learning about the animals that live in them and the children have particularly enjoyed creating food chains and singing songs about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We have also identified the human and physical features of a wide variety of habitats.
In connection with our topic, we have been learning about and creating Earth Art. As well as discussing the Earth Art movement, the children have been learning about significant artists, like Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson. The children have particularly enjoyed looking at the work of Debra Butterfield and creating Earth Art animal sculptures. The children were amazed at how Raku Inoue skilfully combines natural materials to create intricate insect sculptures. It has been a pleasure to see the children take pride in creating eye-catching pieces of work.
In Literacy, we have been consolidating our learning about different habitats and the effects of global warming and deforestation. We have been learning to write a story-opener, using the film ‘Over the Hedge’ as an example. We have been working hard to produce a class story-opener about Polar Bear in the Arctic and next week the children will write their own story-opener, choosing an animal and habitat of their choice. Once we have completed the Literacy unit we will be learning about how to set out a postcard message and will be using the text Meercat Mail as the inspiration for this. In addition, so far this term, the children have completed two pieces of independent writing for their Progression in Writing books. The first being a non-chronological report about Hedgehogs and the second piece being an interview with Wangari Maathai.
The children have enjoyed their Maths work; we have been focusing on fractions of shapes and number. We started the term by revising multiplication as groups of objects and now we are coming to the end of our fractions unit, our next unit will be time. The children have enjoyed using sweet treats and practical resources to assist them in their understanding of fractions.
In PSHE, the y1 children have been discussing how to keep safe and who can help them to do so. The y2 children have been discussing health and wellbeing and considered how a balanced diet and sleep is essential. Additionally, we have been using the Zones of Emotions to discuss our feelings, daily and ensuring that we demonstrate the CHERISH values. We have also been demonstrating our understanding of different beliefs in R.E; the children have been exploring Special Symbols and Objects within a variety of religions. The children enjoyed using pop up paper craft techniques to create 3d models of churches.
